Feb 13, 2022.

It’s been an up and down ride for Memphis this season, but the Tigers came through in a huge moment by winning 69-59 at No. 6 Houston in one of several college basketball games with NCAA Tournament bubble implications on Saturday. Houston’s 37 game home winning streak was ended by Memphis, who knocked down 18 of 19 free throws in the second half.
The loss was the second in a row for the Cougars, who also lost at SMU on Wednesday. Memphis is 4-2 in Quad 1 games. In Quad 2 and 3 games, the Tigers are just 6-6, which is why they’ll be fighting for an NCAA Tournament bid. The outcome on Saturday was crucial to getting the program back to the Big Dance, as fourth-year coachPenny Hardaway seeks to deliver with the talent he’s been able to pull into the program.

Houston looked to be in firm command entering the week, but the outcome brings some intrigue to the title race. SMU beat East Carolina on Saturday and the two teams are tied atop the conference at 9-2. There were several games on Saturday that had league title implications. Let’s take a look at some of the day’s biggest winners and loser.

A rare test was passed by the winner.

It was the first time since December that the second-ranked team in the country faced a ranked opponent. St. Mary’s pulled within eight points on a dunk by Tass with 3:08 remaining, but the Zags held them without a point the rest of the way to win 74-58. Drew Time had 25 points on 11 of 16 shooting. There is a chance that the Zags will be the top ranked team in the new poll on Monday. Saint Mary’s lost at Santa Clara and beat San Diego during a 1-2 week that included a loss at Santa Clara and a win over San Diego.

UCLA was on the struggle bus.

UCLA has lost three of its last four games, including a heartbreaking loss to USC. Despite being without their leading scorer for the second game in a row, the USC held the Bruins to just 30% shooting. Senior guard Drew Peterson picked up the offensive slack in Mobley’s absence with 27 points and 12 rebound on 9 of 13 shooting. There were five blocked shots. Tyger Campbell’s shot would have forced overtime if UCLA’s Jaylen Clark had not stole the inbounds pass. The prayer bounced off the back of the rim. USC has won five in a row in the series, but they will meet again in the regular season finale on March 5 at UCLA.
The winner is the Big 12 race.

If you wrote off the Bears after they lost at Kansas and fell two games behind the Jayhawks in the Big 12 race, think again. The Bears beat the Longhorns 80-63 on Saturday, just five days after Texas upset Kansas. The Jayhawks (21-5, 9-3) hold a one-game lead over the Bears in the Big 12.

It was a loser: Baylor’s depth.

Saturday’s victory was the second in a row for the Bears that was double-digits, but it came with a cost. Tchatchoua left the game in the first half with a gruesome knee injury. The emotional leader who played a key role in last season’s national title team is a redshirt junior who averages 8.6 points and seven rebound per game off the bench. The Bears have been without their top scorer for the past five games due to a foot injury. Flo Thamba could be asked to play a bigger role in Tchamwa Tchatchoua’s absence. Thamba played 17.4 minutes per game but played 15 in the second half alone on Saturday, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebound and four blocks.

The winner is Kansas.

The Jayhawks beat Oklahoma 71-69 to maintain their hold on first place in the Big 12. The Sooners held a five-point lead with eight minutes left in the game. The Sooners had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Jordan Goldwire’s attempt just missed. OU hadn’t won at Kansas since 1993. One of the heroes for the Jayhawks was true freshman, and a promising young role player, who made the most of his opportunity off the bench, with this clutch 3-point shot in the second half.

Rutgers coming on strong was the winner.

Don’t look now, but the Scarlet Knights are here. The Rutgers team that was ranked 217 in the NET ranking on December 6th is now 15-9 after beating Wisconsin 73-65 on the road Saturday. The Scarlet Knights have a better winning percentage in Quad 1 games than they do in the other three quadrants. The loss cost Wisconsin a share of first-place in the Big Ten, and left Illinois alone atop the league once again.

The Big Ten Network is on February 12, 2022.

Georgetown is still winless.

Since joining the Big East in the 2003-04 season, Georgetown has never won fewer than four conference games. It might be a relief for the Hoyas to just win one league game in 2022. The best chance for a victory for Georgetown will be in a Feb. 24 home game against DePaul. Next week there are road games against two ranked teams. Embattled fifth-year coach Patrick Ewing needs a miracle to keep his job.

Alabama won ugly against Arkansas.

Alabama committed 24 turnovers, was outrebounded on the offensive glass 21-11, and 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 The win was no piece of art, but it was enough to get the Tide back to.500 in league play. There are some positives for Alabama despite the lackluster performance on the offensive side. Arkansas had a nine-game winning streak snapped by the outcome. The defensive unit that has struggled to reach the elite standard set by last season’s squad was encouraged by the fact that the Tide held Arkansas to just 31.4% shooting.

Walker Kessler is the winner.

Kessler recorded his second triple-double of the season in the win over Texas A&M. Texas A&M shot just 17.9% from the floor in Saturday’s first half, and with Kessler patrolling the paint, he is averaging 5.7 blocks per game over his last nine. Kessler’s triple-doubles have 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217

Florida State was crushed by UNC.

The injury-decimated Florida State continued its free-fall with a 94-74 loss at North Carolina. It was somewhat surprising that the final score was respectable, even though UNC led 62-24 at halftime. It was UNC’s largest lead at halftime of a home game. FSU failed to score 62 points in its two most recent contests and allowed the Tar Heels to reach that mark in the first half. In the first half, North Carolina hit 23 of 31 shots, including 9 of 12 from 3-point range. FSU’s injury problems only got worse during the game, with leading scorer Caleb Mills leaving due to an ankle injury.
Big O is the winner.

In Kentucky’s 78-57 win over Florida on Saturday, Oscar Tshiebwe led the way with 27 points and 19 rebound. The big man came one rebound short of a double-double in the first half. Let that sink in. Washington left the game in the second half with a leg injury, which cast a pall over the afternoon. The Cats are going to be a force to reckon with in March.

The balanced attack was the winner.
The five starting players for the No. 15 Wildcats all reached double figures in a 73-67 win over Seton Hall. The win completed a season sweep of the Pirates for the Cats, who won both games by the same score. The Pirates lost for the first time in three games.

Indiana has dropped three straight.

Indiana entered Saturday as a projected No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but the Hoosiers were considered on the bubble and did not help their case. IU’s third straight loss was marked by the Spartans’ 76-61 win. The five Hoosiers who were suspended for Tuesday’s loss at Northwestern were back, but Indiana shot just 33.9% from the floor. The Spartans were able to avoid a three-game losing streak of their own and stay in touch with the top spot in the league.

Miami won the bubble battle.

Wake Forest and Miami are both on the bubble. According to Palm, the Hurricanes were in the last four in and the Demon Deacons were in the first four out. The ‘Canes overcame a 13-point first half deficit to win 76-72. The outcome marked a sweep of the season for Miami, which committed just seven turnovers as guards Isaiah Wong and Kameron McGusty combined for 42 points.

Murray State was the winner.

Murray State cracked the AP Top 25 this week for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and the Racers solidified their place with consecutive road victories. The Morehead State team is one of the top challengers in the OVC. The Racers have won 14 in a row after losing to auburn. Murray State closed the game on a 15-3 run after trailing 50-42 with 4:24 remaining.

The loser is Wagner who fell to Merrimack.

Merrimack was riding a 14-game winning streak, which included a 71-57 road win over Wagner in January. Despite having lost seven of its past eight, Merrimack was able to pull away in overtime for an 80-65 victory in a Northeast Conference upset. Bryant’s loss to Long Island University dashed the hopes of a perfect run through league play for the Seahawks.

Providence does it again.

Providence has lost two games this season by a combined 50 points. The latest victory was a 76- 73 overtime thriller against DePaul. Providence is 12-0 in games decided by single digits and has a two-game cushion atop the Big East.

West Virginia lost to Oklahoma State.

West Virginia snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Iowa State on Tuesday, but they are still on the bubble. There was no thought of that victory being a turning point in the loss at Oklahoma State on Saturday. WVU was one of the “First four out” in the Big 12. The Cowboys out-rebounded WVU 48-24 and played the role of spoiler quite well.

Alabama A&M won in 4 overtimes.

It took four overtimes, but Alabama A&M defeated Mississippi Valley State. Brandon Powell hit a jumper with eight seconds left in the fourth overtime, and then a potential go-ahead shot from the corner bounced off the rim in the final seconds of the game. Powell’s first made shot from the field was the game-winning one.

Iowa State’s inconsistent play continues to be a loser.

Making sense of Iowa State was already difficult before Saturday, when they lost 75-69 in overtime to Kansas State after leading by 15 in the second half. ISU is just 3-9 in Big 12 play. Would the NCAA Tournament selection committee admit a team with twice as many losses as victories if the Cyclones finished 6-12 in Big 12 play? Palm had Iowa State as a projected No. 7 seed entering the day. It has lost four in a row and needs to stop.

Navy beats Army in dramatic fashion.

Navy avenged a 74-73 loss to the Black Knights with a 52-49 victory over Army. The Midshipmen were led by Tyler Nelson with 16. Josh Caldwell’s last-second shot attempt fell short as Army fell to 13-13 with the loss.

Idaho beat Weber State.

Idaho entered Saturday’s game against Weber State with just four victories against Division I opponents this season, while Weber State was in second place in the Big Sky. The Vandals upset Weber 83-79 thanks to a huge day from the guards. The duo combined for 57 points to hand the visitors their third straight loss.

Oregon stumbles hard.

Oregon had won five straight and 11 of its last 12 to reach the No. 10 seed line in Palm’s projected brackets. The Bears used a 24-0 run in the first half to open up a commanding lead, and they went on to win 78-64. It will be the third Quad 3 loss of the season for Oregon. The Bears had lost 10 straight before this week. The trip to Oregon was all they needed since they got back in the win column. They won at Oregon State on Wednesday.

Virginia Tech has won five straight.

The Hokies looked like roadkill when they lost to Miami in January. The team that was supposed to finish fifth in the conference was only 10-10) and 2-7 in league play. The Hokies won their fifth straight game on Saturday by defeating Syracuse 71-59. The Hokies are now 15-10 and have a pulse. Virginia Tech scored 17 points off of turnovers against the Orange, who turned the ball over just four times.
