The Indiana Pacers are trading Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday and a protected 2023 second-round pick to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson. Two days before the deadline, both sides are helping one another shuffle the deck, as they have been heavily featured in trade rumors of late.
Rumors of a possible deal involving De’Aaron Fox had been denied by the Kings. It had been widely reported that the Kings were going to build around Fox rather than trade him, but apparently, their other top young guard in Haliburton was available after all. The Kings land a two-time All-Star who represents Fox’s best hope yet at a real co-star.
The Pacers are going to have to break up their partnership with Myles Turner. Indiana can now move forward with Turner as its long-term option at center and a new backcourt with Hield and Chris Duarte. Indiana has taken a step back this season, but is in a good position to return to the playoffs a year from now.

Both the Pacers and Kings want the same thing. The Kings haven’t made the playoffs in 16 years, and they have added a player that they believe can help get them back there sooner rather than later. The Pacers haven’t been in the lottery for a long time, but a tank-centered rebuild is simply not something that organization has ever proven willing to do. Pacers owner Herb Simon doesn’t want to see a rebuild. Fans don’t want to see it if I don’t want to. When we can build on the go, why would we want to go through a rebuild? That’s the talent.

He has taken a step towards that. He has realigned his roster away from the two-center approach that had failed in the past, and he has added a younger, cheaper player. Neither the Pacers nor the Kings are locks to make it back into the playoffs next year, but both took steps in that direction with this deal. The teams graded in the deal.

Indiana gets something.

The Indiana Pacers received an A- grade.

The Pacers haven’t been known for blockbusters, and the years of mediocrity that preceded this one are a testament to their cautious approach. Indiana doesn’t tank, yet right now, they’re well positioned for the sort of on-the-fly rebuild Simon wants.
The Pacers have one of the NBA’s more exciting young backcourts in the 22-year-old Haliburton and the 24-year-old Chris Duarte. Jackson has flashed upside in his first season. The Pacers picked up a first-round pick from Cleveland in the Caris LeVert trade, but they have the NBA’s fifth-worst record. It will take some luck on lottery night for them to land the star that ties everything together.

It’s the perfect place for a small-market franchise like Indiana. The Pacers didn’t have to spend a lot of time at the bottom of the table to get young players and picks. It only took a couple of draft picks and some trading. That doesn’t mean that this deal was a steal. A two-time All-Star is what Sabonis is. He is on a team with Turner at center and a sudden influx of shot-creation from Haliburton. The Pacers were wise to find a trading partner that was desperate for the kind of player they no longer needed because he was the rare expendable All-Star. It’s similar to the deal the Magic made to send Nikola Vucevic to Chicago last season. The Magic gave away their most accomplished player, but it was a big man who was not good in the playoffs. Neither of them can anchor a playoff defense. Fortunately for the Pacers and the Magic, they were able to overlook that because they were desperate for talent.

Thompson is likely to be bought out. The real question mark is Hield. He’s a valuable player, but is he a long-term fit on an Indiana team that already has other players? If Indiana tries to flip him at the deadline, it will be for an expiring contract and some second-round picks. Such a move would allow the Pacers to improve their team even more. The Trail blazers should pay attention. You reload on the fly.

If the pick is between 31 and 55, it’s a second-round pick.

The grade of the Kings is C+.

The grade should be incomplete. The Kings are not done yet. A Richaun Holmes trade is imminent. Turner is a stellar 3-point shooter, even though he might have been able to coexist with Sabonis. He has taken five 3’s this season. The best deal would be a swap between Charlotte and P.J. Washington. The Hornets would get the rim-running center they’ve been looking for and the Kings could add a power forward to replace Harrison Barnes. It’s not fair to judge this trade in a vacuum.

We can judge the Fox-Sabonis pair. Fox will benefit from having a center that can provide a modicum of spacing. There will be plenty of baskets in transition because of the rebound and outlet passing of Sabonis. Downhill guards like Fox prefer pick-and-roll partners who can catch passes over those that are best suited to popping back behind the basket. Will Fox cut off the ball when Sabonis is in the high-post? Fox’s growth is going to be needed to create a lethal combination of speed and screening instincts.
It’s worth asking if the Kings should have held firm. His shooting makes him a cleaner point guard to build around, and he still has two years remaining on his rookies scale contract, whereas Fox is making the max. It’s not clear if Indiana would have been interested in a Fox package, but the cost was substantial. The Kings were able to get off of the last two years of the Hield contract. That will allow for a starting role for Mitchell. That can help the defense.

Indiana winning this deal doesn’t mean that Sacramento lost it. There are still moves to be made by the Kings. The Fox-Sabonis duo is going to need some time to get to know each other. This deal could look worse if you check back in a year or two.
